Today, Lady Wray re-emerges with her first musical offering of 2021. Her new song out today, “Games People Play,” builds upon the path she laid out on her 2019 singles “Piece of Me” and “Come On In,” which have grown to become two of her biggest songs to-date since the release of her 2016 album Queen Alone and continue the lineage of soulfully-steeped R&B that she’s honed over the course of her storied career. Working alongside the likes of Missy Elliot, Aaliyah, Ginuwine, Timbaland, and The Black Keys since she first emerged as a burgeoning vocalist, Lady Wray has transformed into a fully formed artist with a renewed ambition for tapping into new sounds and creating timeless R&B music.
“I just had my daughter at the time, so I was trying to get back into song writing mode all while being a new mom,” Lady Wray says of the making of the track. “The lyrics came to me fairly easy because of the production by El Michels Affair. It reminded me of the early 90’s when dating was fun and complicated. Basically a song about past relationships that was full of shit because either you were too young to be in love or know what it truly meant, and playing games because that’s all you knew. Back then those relationships were never meant to last.”
Produced by frequent collaborator Leon Michels, the new track represents the breadth of Nicole’s discography, melding the Hip Hop and R&B sounds she’s become known for with shades of Soul & Gospel that are close to her heart for a reflective tune to welcome in the Summer.
